Lifer: Stories from the Inside/Out

150 Days

In partnership with The Francisco Homes, TheatreWorkers Project artists Susan Franklin Tanner and Marlene McCurtis, along with guest artist, Ken Hartman, conducted writing and theatre workshops for a group of 21 men on parole from serving life sentences. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the final seven workshops were done via Zoom and a video collage was created for online viewing.

Susan Franklin Tanner received an LA Department of Cultural Affairs Artist in Residence Social Justice grant that augmented the 2019-20 California Arts Council Reentry Through the Arts grant activities. The workshops gave the participants an opportunity to examine, express, and redefine their life stories through a creative process.

“The Theatre Workshop allowed me a safe creative space at the outset of my transition. It allowed me to use the tools I learned while incarcerated and let me feel better about transitional living."
