Rubén Guevara

BIOGRAPHY

Rubén “Funkahuatl” Guevara, Collaborating Teaching Artist: Poetry, has been a theatre artist, playwright, composer, director, producer, and actor for more than 45 years. He taught poetry/spoken word at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California for 17 years with institutionalized youth and incarcerated men and women in the prison compound. He has taught poetry/spoken word for incarcerated youth at LA Central Juvenile Hall, the California Youth Authority in Camarillo, California, and at Challenger Memorial Youth Center in Lancaster, California, as well. Representative performances: Confessions of a Radical Chicano Doo-Wop Singer, directed by Dan Kwong, is a solo theatre performance based on excerpts from his autobiography of the same title, published by the University of California Press (Spring 2018): at the Mark Taper Auditorium, Los Angeles Central Library (October 2017, sold out) and Casa 0101 Theatre (July 2016). With TheatreWorkers Project: Teaching Artist: Poetry for Arts in Corrections Residency at California State Prison, LAC-Lancaster, CA (Spring 2019) and poetry workshops at Dad’s Back! Academy (2017, 2018).
